The Bayside Historical Society welcomes John Griffin of Griffin Gravestone Conservation for a hands-on workshop dedicated to the safe and respectful cleaning of historic gravestones. This program blends education, demonstration, and guided practice to help preserve the stories etched in stone.
Workshop Goals:
Why Gravestone Cleaning Matters
Discover the historical and cultural importance of cemeteries and why proper preservation protects legibility, dignity, and heritage. We’ll also cover when cleaning is appropriate — and when it’s best left undone — along with the ethics of cemetery work.
Stone Identification & Deterioration
Learn to recognize common gravestone materials, including marble, granite, slate, sandstone/brownstone, and limestone. Understand how to identify each type and spot common issues such as biological growth, flaking, cracking, and surface decay.
Safe Cleaning Practices
Learn about gravestone cleaning do's and don'ts, including best practices, what to avoid, and essential safety guidelines.
Live Demonstration
Watch step-by-step techniques, including assessing a gravestone before cleaning, proper wetting technique, gentle brushing methods, application of biological cleaner, and the final rinse process.
Hands-On Participant Practice
Put your knowledge into practice as you clean gravestones under expert supervision. Receive real-time guidance and feedback to ensure safe and effective techniques.
Wrap-Up & Optional Extended Practice
We’ll conclude with a Q&A session at noon. Participants are welcome to stay until 2:00 PM for additional hands-on cleaning, deeper discussion, and continued learning.
