Family Holiday Celebration at the Castle

Bayside Historical Society is ringing in the holidays with a festive day of seasonal crafts for kids, music, games, seasonal snacks, storytelling, and of course, a visit from Santa! Our beautiful Castle will be decked out for the holidays — come join in the fun!

Do you quilt, sew or just love textiles? Join other sewing enthusiasts in an afternoon of creating and socializing. Bring something you are currently working on and enjoy the camaraderie of community sewing! While this is not a sewing class, beginner seamstresses and quilters are most welcome and will find inspiration and guidance. There are a limited number of sewing machines available, but please try to bring your own if you have one. Also, do not feel obligated to sew on a machine — hand work (cross-stitch, embroidery, knitting, crocheting, etc.) is always welcome!
Community Singers of Queens Winter Concert

Bayside Historical Society welcomes the Community Singers of Queens to the Castle for a special musical event! They will perform a variety of music, from classical and spiritual to jazz standards and pop. Plus, the audience will get the chance to join them for a fun holiday singalong featuring beloved seasonal favorites!
The Community Singers of Queens is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to bringing the joy of music to audiences throughout Queens for 60 years. Their members come from all walks of life and are united by a love of music and joy of performing with a group.
Civilian Combat Photography in WWII

Bayside Historical Society welcomes history enthusiast Eric Weil to the Castle for an eye-opening presentation on World War II photography that will go beyond the more familiar photographic work of the Army Signal Corps. Eric Weil delves into the photography of the civilians — and the women correspondents in particular, many of whose photographs were overlooked as credit was given to the publishers rather than the individuals themselves. This presentation will highlight some of the iconic photos taken in WWII by civilians while bringing to life the photographers' own stories. Attendees will also learn about some of the cameras that were used at that time and about the state of photography in the 1940s.

Decorate the Castle for the Holidays

Bayside Historical Society thanks the Key Club of Bayside High School and their Moderator Steve Jacoby for decorating the Christmas tree and lighting the menorah in the BHS Castle. Special thanks to BHS’s Anne O'Connell, Carol Marian, and Laura James for their great decorating skills and to Steve Cavesano for his time lapse video. Truly, the holiday elves were hard at work! BHS Vintage Car Show 2023

Ride back in time with Bayside Historical Society's classic car show! A variety of vintage and antique automobiles will be showcased on the lawn of the Castle at Fort Totten.

The car show is presented by the Long Island Sound Region of the Classic Car Club of America, in conjunction with Bayside Historical Society.
Veterans Day Ceremony at Captain Dermody Triangle

Bayside Historical Society and the Bayside Hills Civic Association commemorate Veterans Day at the historic Captain Dermody Triangle in Bayside Hills. Alongside community leaders and honored guests, we will lay a wreath to honor the memory of Baysider Captain William C. Dermody and all those who bravely fought in the Civil War. Representatives from Co. K, 67th NY Infantry Volunteers Association will attend the ceremony in period-correct Civil War uniforms and include an honor guard carrying a reproduction of their Regimental Flag and drummer during a "present arms" salute.
Our ceremony will include a rededication of the newly renovated Captain Dermody Triangle, the site of one of NYC's oldest war memorials. This is a free event. Please join us as we honor and thank our military veterans for their service to our country.

22nd Annual Totten Trot 5K Foot Race & Kids' Fun Run

Bayside Historical Society's annual Totten Trot 5K Foot Race is a Halloween-themed, waterfront course in historic Fort Totten Park on Little Neck Bay in Bayside. Runners will pass through the Historic District, which consists of buildings dating to the late 1800s. The start and finish are located at the landmarked Officers' Club, home of Bayside Historical Society. The Kids' Fun Run at 10:00am is a short-distance sprint for tiny tots and kids up to 12, grouped by age category. Halloween costumes are encouraged for adults and kids!
PLUS: This year's Totten Trot 5K will feature a special guest appearance by the 501st Legion’s Empire City Garrison, a worldwide Star Wars costuming organization!
Fall Garden Cleanup at the Castle

Calling all volunteers! It's time to tidy up the Castle gardens and get them ready for a winter rest. Come help us mulch, rake leaves, divide and replant perennial plants, and prepare the gardens for the next growing season. All levels of gardening expertise are welcome! The cost is free; tools and supplies will be provided.

Bayside Historical Society is excited to be part of this year's Open House New York Weekend, a five-borough-wide event that celebrates architecture and design.
Since 1984, BHS has been located at the Castle in Fort Totten Park. Built in 1887, the building was originally used by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as their Officers’ Mess Hall and Club. The Castle is one of the finest surviving examples in New York City of Gothic Revival castellated architecture, and is a NYC designated landmark that is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
We will be participating on Sunday, October 22nd, from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. Our staff will be on hand to give tours and talk about our beautiful building and its history. Light refreshments will be provided.
Civil War Living History at Fort Totten — CANCELLED

Enter the camp of Company K of the 67th NY Infantry for a day of Civil War Living History at Fort Totten, where you can walk in the footsteps of Union soldiers and discover all aspects of life in the 1860s. Interact with the 67th NY and learn of the lives of the soldiers they imitate: what they thought, how they ate, how they were clothed, how they fought, and how they endured through the greatest war in America's history. This event is free to all!
19th Century Base Ball Game — CANCELLED

This event unfortunately has been cancelled due to inclement weather. It will be rescheduled in 2024.
Come to Fort Totten Park for an unforgettable day of family fun! Watch the New York Mutuals vs. the Brooklyn Atlantics in a historical re-creation of a baseball game the way it was played back in the 1880s! The teams will wear replicas of the original 19th century baseball uniforms and use replica balls and bats from the time period. No baseball gloves, since those had not yet been invented! The players will answer questions from the audience and invite children to field grounders. Have a great time while you learn about the history of baseball.
This event is FREE for everyone to attend, although donations are appreciated. Bring your blankets, lawn chairs, and picnics; snacks and beverages will also be available. The Bayside Historical Society Castle will also be open for tours! Parking will be available in Little Bay Park.

This area of Whitestone was home to beer gardens, mansions to rich and famous politicians, stage and film personalities, and others of interest. Join us to hear the rich history and anecdotes of our local community.

Vong Pak's Binari: Experimental World Music from Korea

Vong Pak’s Binari is an experimental world music influenced by Korean folk music, improvisation, avant-garde, jazz, as well as storytelling. The characteristic triple rhythmic groove, South and North Korean folk song hybrid together with trombone and drum set sound. Like the Korean Epic song, Pansori, they draw the story by music. This unique combination of Korean folk music mixed with western styles like jazz and funk will expand the listener's ears, showcasing the Korean tradition to western audiences.

The acclaimed Diálogos Duo presents the World Premiere of "Soirée for Pixinguinha," which celebrates the Brazilian master's 125th birthday with thirteen inspired tributes. Composed in the virtuosic genre known as Choro, their music is an exciting alchemy of Afro-Brazilian, contemporary jazz and classical styles. Diálogos Duo features composer Richard Boukas on the guitar and Louis Arques on the clarinet and bass clarinet.

Bayside Historical Society welcomes The Agoci Band to the Castle ballroom for a concert of high-energy music that will have you dancing in the aisles. Agoci (nurturing the soul) was founded by dancer, choreographer, teacher, and lead singer Rol'hans Innocent, to promote Haitian Dance and Music around the world. This band performs original songs, in English and Haitian Creole, about the joy, the love and the struggle of Haitian people. Agoci combines Traditional Haitian Folk Music with Hip-Hop, Compas, and Calypso flavors into a sound that everyone can dance to. Its music is unlike anything you heard before.

Joseph Cornell Shadow Boxes: Lecture and Crafting Workshop

In this BHS workshop led by artist and Creative Arts Therapist Betsy Lazarus, you will learn more about the life and art of Joseph Cornell, an innovative mid-20th Century artist known for his shadow box assemblages. Further exploring the creative process, participants will design a shadow box from assorted objects into a work of art both unique and personally meaningful. You are encouraged to bring objects both 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional of your own to include in your piece along with frames and other decorative supplies that will be provided. No artistic experience is required for this program!
Americana: Songs of the 40s and 50s

Americana music has been defined as incorporating "elements of various American roots music styles, including country, roots-rock, folk, bluegrass, R&B and blues." For the next event in our exciting Passport Concert Series, BHS welcomes jazz vocalist Barbara Rosene to the Castle for a musical trip through the 1940s and 1950s. Renowned for her passionate interpretation of the great music of the 1920s through the 40s, Barbara takes classic material from all eras of jazz and makes the material sound fresh and emotionally relevant today.

Bayside Historical Society celebrates Irish Cultural heritage during our Annual Membership Meeting. This members-only event will feature the Installation Ceremony of newly elected BHS Officers and Trustees, as well as Volunteer Recognition. Afterwards, we’ll gather in the ballroom for Irish music & refreshments to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. Enjoy delectable corned beef sliders, homemade Irish soda bread, and Irish coffee while being entertained by the Ciara Greene School of Irish Step Dancing and Celtic guitarist & singer John Walsh.

From his childhood love of Lionel trains to a career as a branch line manager for the Long Island Rail Road to founding the Long Island Rail Road Historical Society, train enthusiast David D. Morrison has devoted much of his life to railroad history. Having written numerous books for Arcadia Publishing's Long Island Rail Road series, David brings his extensive knowledge to the BHS Castle for a fascinating presentation about the LIRR Port Washington Branch. All aboard for a trip through history!

Do you quilt, sew or just love textiles? Join other sewing enthusiasts in an afternoon of creating and socializing. Bring something you are currently working on and enjoy the camaraderie of community sewing! While this is not a sewing class, beginner seamstresses and quilters are most welcome and will find inspiration and guidance. There are a limited number of sewing machines available, but please try to bring your own if you have one. Also, do not feel obligated to sew on a machine — hand work (cross-stitch, embroidery, knitting, crocheting, etc.) is always welcome!

Celebrate Valentine's Day in style at Bayside Historical Society's Jazz Cocktail Party! Live entertainment by the 12-piece Dean Saghafi Orchestra, featuring vocalist Kathryn Farmer, will provide the romantic soundtrack while you enjoy wine, a signature cocktail, and a selection of passed hors d'oeuvres in our beautiful ballroom. Coffee and sweets will round out this enchanting afternoon.
Craft Night: Make a Shamballa Macrame Bracelet

In this fun jewelry-making workshop, crafter Elaine Miller will show you how to create a beautiful and meaningful Shamballa macrame bracelet. A Shamballa bracelet is a hand-knotted bracelet from Tibetan Buddhism and stands for unconditional love, freedom and strength. Shamballa is the Mythical Kingdom located north of the Himalayas close to Tibet. The bracelets remind the wearer of the importance of unconditional love and mercy, living with an open heart and giving and receiving trust. The characteristics of the stones used give the wearer protection, strength, energy and a sense of decisiveness and determination. Supplies and materials are included in the cost of the workshop. Participants will take home their handiwork at the end of the class.

BHS welcomes local author and historian Sergey Kadinsky to the Castle for a presentation about his book, Hidden Waters of New York City. This book offers a historical survey of 101 hidden lakes, creeks, inlets, ponds, and reservoirs within the borders of New York City, including Fort Totten Pond, Crocheron Pond, Oakland Lake, and Alley Pond. These minor waterways serve a vital role in promoting sustainability and hold potential for revival that could offer cultural, economic and environmental benefits for the city. Learn how these hidden waterways impacted our past, what are their present conditions, and what are the plans for their future.
22nd Annual Winter Art Show

Bayside Historical Society's 22nd Annual Winter Art Show, showcasing contemporary Queens-based artists working in a variety of styles and mediums, features a combination of online galleries on our website and a live exhibit in The Bay Terrace Shopping Center. The online galleries also feature the emerging talent of student artists at Bayside High School in Queens, as well as artwork by senior citizens living in long-term care in Queens. The show will run for the entire month of February 2023.

Open Archives Night: The American Legion and Historical Map Collections

At BHS's upcoming Open Archives Night, highlights from two popular archival collections will be on display for up-close viewing. Our American Legion exhibit is a collection of historical memorabilia from the American Legion Post 510 of Bayside that includes rare documents, photos, and artifacts. Our historical map collection is a fun and fascinating trip down memory lane with maps of northeast Queens detailing street names, local shops, celebrity residences, and landmarks. See if you can find the name of the streets where you lived or grew up and compare "then and now" photos of your neighborhood.

BHS is excited to announce the first event in our 2023 Passport Concert Series lineup! The David Glukh Klezmer Ensemble is one of the most unusual groups of its kind, and have performed worldwide to critical acclaim. Eclectic by repertoire and design, the group is composed of David Glukh (piccolo trumpet), Ronn Yedidia (accordion/piano), David Keen (violin), Yuval Edoot (percussion), and Eddy Khaimovich (bass). The ensemble performs traditional klezmer music along with special "fusions" between klezmer and other musical traditions of the world.

By popular demand, expert crafters Denise Rizzuto and Lisa Wilson return to the BHS Castle for another home decor crafting workshop! Denise and Lisa will be providing hands-on instructions for assembling and painting the charming tiered serving tray pictured above. This photo shows what this versatile tray would look like if it were decorated for Christmas. All supplies and materials are included in the cost of the workshop and participants will take home their handiwork at the end of the class.
