Holiday Cookies & Crafts

Cost: $5 per child/$15 maximum per family

Time: 1:00pm to 3:00 pm

 

Join us at the Castle for this walk-in workshop. Families are invited  to craft delightful decorations celebrating the winter season. Hot cocoa and cookies will be served, and Santa will be making a guest appearance.

Around-the-World Holiday Brunch

Cost: $30 BHS members; $35 non-members; $20 children 5-10 / $10 under age 5

Ring in the season with our jazz-themed holiday brunch! Enjoy a festive international buffet in our newly renovated ballroom,  listen to piano renditions of jazz favorites, and sing along with holiday carols and songs. Santa has promised to visit!

Decorate the Castle for the Holidays

BHS Autumn Vintage Car Show 2017

​Time: 9:00am to 3:00pm

Ride back in time with our classic car show! A variety of vintage and antique automobiles will be showcased on the lawn at Fort Totten Castle. Complimentary lite breakfast from 9:00-11:00am. The car show is presented by the Long Island Sound Region of the Classic Car Club of America, in conjunction with Bayside Historical Society. Nostalgia Night

Long-time local residents as well as other BHS members will come together to share stories and photos and recall days of Old Bayside. Maps and photos from our archives will be on display, and everyone is invited to share photos and memories of life in Bayside during any time period. Come take a trip down memory lane! Refreshments will be served.

Lawrence Cemetery Performance and Tour

Cost: FREE

Time: 2:00pm to 3:00pm

Visit this NYC Landmark and final resting place of the city's first popularly elected mayor, Cornelius Van Wyck Lawrence, and other descendants of one of Bayside's founding families. History will come alive as costumed performers recount the stories of different members of the Lawrence family. The Lawrence Cemetery is located at the corner of 216th Street and 42nd Avenue. Please note: This tour will require walking on uneven ground and there are no restrooms on site.

16th Annual Totten Trot 5K Foot Race & Kids Fun Run

Entry Fee: $30 until October 15; $35 until October 28; $40 race day

Time:
7:30am: Registration begins 
9:00am: 5K Foot Race & Walk 
10:00am: Kids' Fun Run 


Waterfront course in historic Fort Totten Park on Little Neck Bay in Bayside, a pristine stretch surrounding a preserved Civil War fortress. Runners will pass through the historic district which consists of buildings dating to the late 1800s. The Fort is situated where the Long Island Sound meets the East River at the Throgs Neck Bridge. The start and the finish are located at the landmark Officers’ Club, home of the Bayside Historical Society. The course includes a loop out onto the Little Bay Path to the Throgs Neck Bridge.

 

Kids’ Fun Run (costumes suggested): A short-distance sprint for tiny tots and kids up to 12 years of age, grouped in age categories. Special “Cookie Medals” for participants in the Fun Run!

Rain or shine! Costumes, cash prizes, awards, raffles, and goodie bags! Reception & awards presented in the historic ballroom of the Castle. All proceeds benefit the Bayside Historical Society, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

BHS Meet The Candidates and NY State Constitutional Convention Forum

October 19, 2017

Cost: FREE

Time: 7:30pm

Find out who wants to be NYC Mayor, Public Advocate, Comptroller, Queens Borough President, and your local City Councilmember. Plus, hear a detailed explanation on the little talked about ballot question this November: Should there be a NY State Constitutional Convention held in 2019? We will have an open discussion on the ballot measure and recognized advocates who will speak in favor of and against having the constitutional convention.

3rd Annual Independence Day Celebration

Bayside Historical Society is hosting an Independence Day Celebration with a free concert and fireworks display by Grucci in Fort Totten Park sponsored by Councilmember Paul A. Vallone, Queens Borough President Melinda Katz, and Dime Community Bank. Food vendors will be on site.

Family Fun Day at Fort Totten's Parade Grounds — EVENT CANCELED

Thursday Night at the Movies

Our featured film from the BHS silent movie collection is "Kiki," a 1926 romantic comedy starring Norma Talmadge and Ronald Colman and directed by Clarence Brown. Norma Talmadge, one of the actresses featured in our Actors' Enclave Exhibit, was one of the most recognizable faces of the silent era. Together with her sisters Constance and Natalie (the first wife of Buster Keaton), Norma was one of the famous "Talmadge Girls."

Refreshments will be served.

The Lambs Speaker - Marc Baron, Shepherd / "Behind the Scenes" Exhibit Preview

The Lambs is America's first (and oldest) professional theatrical organization, founded in New York City in 1874. Any person pursuing a career in entertainment owes their ability to do so to the past actions of a Lamb. Hear a brief history of this remarkable social club, its past members and its lasting reach into theater, film and music.

The evening will include the preview of our new exhibit, "Behind the Scenes: The Actors' Enclave, Act II." Take a peek backstage and get a glimpse of the star's private dressing room!

 

Coffee and desserts will be served.

I'm With Nature — A Walk at Oakland Lake with Aline Euler & BHS

The United Nations commemorates its flagship World Environment Day (WED) in June each year. Countless countries, governments, cities, private sector entities and citizens mark this day by coming together to take action in support of our planet's environment. 

In keeping with this year's theme, "I'm With Nature," Dr. Aline Euler will lead a local nature walk/tour around Oakland Lake in Bayside, a glacial kettle lake, on June 11th @ 2:30 PM. Join with Dr. Euler and Bayside Historical Society to learn about our natural world and the deep links between sustainability and conservation of natural resources.

Kids Crafts with a Civil War Theme

Let's get patriotic! Children ages 4-12 can learn about the role of Fort Totten during the Civil War while making a model of the Castle, models of bridges built by the Army Corps of Engineers. Come to the Castle for crafts, snacks, and an interactive read-aloud. RSVP by May 30th at 718-352-1548.

Tuesday of Spring Break week. Calling all kids ages 4-12 to celebrate Earth Day by creating sculptures and characters using recycled materials. Come to the Castle for crafts, snacks, and an interactive read-a-loud. RSVP by April 15th. 

Dinner and Murder Mystery Theatre

April 01, 2017

Cost: $75 per person

Time: 7:00pm to 10:00pm

Solve the mystery of murder! Join the gangsters and molls of the Roaring Twenties. Live actors and audience participation. Costumes are encouraged but not required. Served appetizers, pulled pork sliders, salmon, mashed potato martini bar with fixings, composed salads and sides. Evening ends with gelato bar and assorted desserts. RSVP by March 28rd.

BHS Annual Membership Meeting

Cost: $5.00 for BHS members; $10.00 for non-members

Time: 7:00pm

The evening will feature a World Champion Irish step dancer and music by Ken Curtin. Ken will perform a selection of Irish songs and briefly explain their historical origins and significance. We'll be serving Irish specialties for refreshments — Irish soda bread, scones, jams, corned beef sandwiches and Irish coffee. Admission cost helps defray the cost of refreshments.

BHS 16th Annual Winter Art Show

February 12, 2017

Cost: Free for BHS members; $5.00 for non-members

Time: 2:00pm

BHS will hold its 16th Annual Winter Art Show at its home in the Castle in Fort Totten Park, February 11-19, 2017. The work of more than thirty local artists will be on display. The opening reception will be held on Sunday, February 12 at 2:00 — awards ceremony, gallery talk, live music and refreshments. The exhibit and reception are open to the public. Hours for the duration of the exhibit will be M-F 10am-4:00pm and 12 noon-4:00 pm Saturday and Sunday. Special evening hours have been added on Thursday, February 16 from 7:00-9:00pm.
